Module Briefing and Assignment 1 Briefing

Lecture

In the class today, Mr Mike briefs us about what are we going to do in this short semester. And he continued by explaining more about our first assignment which is an individual assignment to make a poster for a movie/ video game/ music concert. It should be fictional and it's best for us not to redo a poster for big movies like Pixar, Disney, Fox movies, etc.

After explaining about our assignment he shows us a video

Life After Death by Powerpoint by Don McMillan
It's a very funny video, kind like the savage way to tells you that this is something that you should not do in powerpoint but you're still doing it. It tells me that there shouldn't be too many words in a powerpoint slide but when you do add one you have to consider how big are you going to put your text.

Matte Painting
Before CGI and Green Screen used in the past time, people use the technique called matte painting, first, he showed us this video.

From this video, I learned that in the past time, it's not easy to make a film, where you need to shot on the place and you need to draw everything and you cannot move your camera. it started in 1905 an American film director, Norman Dawn. So he paints the images on a large sheet of glass so that it looks real. But as times goes by this technique started to be not effective anymore so film director tried to find another way and now people started to use a green screen to make CGI as it's so far the colour that has the great contrast.

Key Art

After showing this video Mr Mike explains to us that if we're working with a big company like Disney, etc. They'll give us the guide on what you can do and what you cant do with their images and they'll give you the best quality images that they have and everything that you might do to their images they've already planned and prepared the files for you so that all you need to do is just use the images that they provide.

Intellectual Property

IP protection contains:
  • Trademarks
    • Used as a sign of the origin of a product or service (eg: Google, Apple, Nike). It is also possible to trademark a sound. Trademark must be able to be represented graphically, sounds can be scored. TM sign can be used without registering, the formal registering must be granted up to use R sign. Registration can be done in the IPO Website.
  • Copyright
    • An automatic right that doesn't need to be registered, it exists whenever anybody crates an original work that provides skill and judgement (eg: books, pictures, music, film, dissertation). it protects the expression of an idea but not the idea being expressed.
  • Patents
    • Protect an invention that's new, involve an inventive step and have industrial applications. 2 key things before you patents your idea, first don't tell anybody and get some help from a patent to turn it.
  • Design Right
    • Protects what things look like the shape and appearance, design right is automatic but it only lasts for 3 years if they remain on the register, if they're registered it can protect up to 20 years.
If you don't want to legally patents / protect yourself and claim that you own something, what is the easiest way to do it? email it to your own email so that you have proof of your work.

Copyright and Fair use
Copyright law protects your control over the creative work you make, it requires people to get your permission before they copy, rework and share what you make. You can still copy or share it as long as you check who owns it, get permission to use it, give credit to the creator, buy it (if necessary), and use it responsibly.  When you can copy some part of someones' work it's called fair use. 4 points of fair use are you can only use small part, you need to give it a new meaning to make an original. rework it and use in a totally different way, use it for non-profit.

Licensing

Nowadays with licensing a brand can be used by retailers and manufacturers to get the brand more known at the same time both sides can expand their business. Brands are the best friends of product marketers and in the same way retailers and manufacturers can help brand owners discover the full value of their brands' equity.

    Blog Question
So I choose in the video game industry. Well, it tells me that the interactive industry keeps heading to a better and better direction. It started with just a traditional game and after that started arcade game and many people like it, after that, the industry keeps on growing with the starting of the console game, led by Nintendo, a Japan game manufacturer. Due to the better graphics and the sound, arcades game started to die and people started to move to game console and computer games.

In this case, I think it really benefits the modern interactive industries. Nintendo as a leading control game manufacturer has changed the old gaming world that makes the largest computer company Windows to creates Xbox to compete in the interactive industry. Other than Nintendo and Xbox another Japan game manufacturer that's also well known is Sony PlayStation. coming to a more digital world nowadays people don't really need to go to the store and buy the physical game CD, you can just download the game online and simply play it.

Nowadays we're expecting more and more innovation. We can now have a 360degre experience in playing a game, that introduces the VR and AR game where you can play a game in the real world and walk around to experience the game.
