Packaging and Merchandising
Final Project: Merchandising and Packaging (40%)

Introductions

The Brief
You have to design 6 merchandises for the brand that you have designed previously from Brand and Strategy class. The merchandises should reflect the brand. You have to design a complete set of packaging for the merchandises and think how it should be able to be displayed on the shelves.

Project Requirements
  • Finished packaging should be physically made and its function demonstrable using either the real objects it is to hold, or a mockup of your making.
  • You will document the project’s progress, including photographs and early progress, on your design journal.
  • Remember that craft counts! As with all work in this class, please pretend you are pitching this design to a real-world client.
Project timeline
Week 10: Itemize the 6 merchandises and discuss with your lecturer
Week 11: Prepare mood board and bring a lot of sketches of the packaging and merchandises
Week 12: Ideation and feedback session, box-making tutorial, special in-class challenge, assign early prototyping
Week 13: Feedback session, work day
Week 14: Feedback session and final demos

You have to photograph the final product as evidence for TDS website and upload it in Google Classroom.

Learning outcome:

Creative Brief

WOW KL! were looking to take their WOW KL! brand in a new direction, to introduce Malaysia especially Kuala Lumpur’s slangs. WOW KL! is a brand designed to be a fun, simple and up to date for both foreigners and locals. Trouble was, this is the first time for the brand to incorporate with an event and actually have a lot of elements, colours, and various background style.

So, I created the concept of incorporating the brand with an Art Festival to suit the brands’ art direction. Using the elements in the posters, creating a pop art style merchandise. This will create a new style of merchandise for the brand to show Malaysian slangs through a friendly and fun design.

The result was a style with colourful and standout. As the result, this merchandise set contains 6 items which are a tote bag, t-shirt, drinking bottle, phone case, sticker sets, and badges. My approach was to incorporate the elements in the poster to combine and arrange the placement of the elements to create a simple yet colourful and fun image. I also took the bold move to use background design from the brand book and poster as the background of some items and use the 3D pop art typo style. It set off my merchandise beautifully to suit the simple yet fun and colourful style.

Reflection

For this assignment at first I don't really like it as, to be honest, I don't really like my logo and I am also confused how to use all my elements in the merchandising as there're so many elements and colours and it's all bright. But at the time I'm doing this assignment it's actually not as bad as what I thought. And again thank God this assignment has no errors. If the same thing happens again I have no enough money to pay any more. But I'm satisfied with the final result of this assignment.
