Creative Brief

SPM Compendium of 30 Games was looking to take their SPM Compendium of 30 Games brand in a new direction, dialling up their use of 6 boards to play 30 games. Their SPM Compendium of 30 Games is designed to be a fun, simple for the whole family. Trouble was, even though they did make it looks that it contains many games and actually pricey, they looked messy, the use of the spaces are not really effective and the material of the packaging will not stay for a long time.

So, I created a concept all around size. Using the plastic figures, creating a cartoon style illustration. This contrast of the old packaging that uses photos of the 6 boards available in the box.

The result was a style with minimalist and standout. Most board games on the shelves in Malaysia use illustration to show the characters on the box, so my approach was to do the same thing but as this game have no character, I used the plastic figures as the character. I also took the bold move to use white as the key label colour. It set off my illustrations beautifully and gave added impact to their on-shelf presence that looks like the modern board games.

Reflection

It's actually really exciting to be able to learn how to repackage a toy. Well, nowadays most of the games are board game type as I think they wanted to bring back the habit of playing non-digital games, where you sit together and play together, interact with people. Some old board games are not packaged nicely and for millennials, they won't really feel like they need to buy it because it doesn't look exciting. I learned a lot from this assignment. But I am really upset that the final outcome is somehow not satisfying because after the printing when I paste the sticker to the board that I've assembled from laser cut, it's not on the right position. I actually really wanted to redo it again but I won't have enough money to do my final project if I redo this packaging again, the sticker and the material already cost me a lot so I have no other way to fix it.
