Lectures :
Lecture 1/Tutorial 1 (28/03/18) :
Printing is when a file is transferred from 1 surface to another surface. The 1st actual printing was in Korea 750AD. The 1st printed book in China is in 1899. The first book with illustration was in AD 868. The printing before with a steel, they have to craft the character in reverse and it's unavoidable until the introduction of moveable type that was pioneered in China but achieved in Korea.
Lecture 2/Tutorial 2 (04/04/18) :
When we're talking about format we need to be aware of the format. The format includes size, banding, material. The consideration when you are about to determine the format of the book. The consideration of the material is based on the content of the book. for example, when you're making a children's book you'll need to consider the size and material of the cover. The need to record or writing something down in a format. In palm leave format how they get the text on it was by using the stylus. The scribes were the only people in ancient Egypt that could read and write Hieroglyphics. The Egyptian scribes wrote on a special type of paper called papyrus. The word papyrus refers to a thick type of paper made from the pith of the papyrus plant (Cyperus papyrus). The earliest known printed book is Chinese by using paper, it is in a scroll format. Paper was invented as mentioned earlier in 179-41 BCE.
Forum Question:
What are the advantages of the current book format (as used today) over the scroll and palm leave formats from the perspective of the binding?
Answer:
I think the advantages of the current book format is that we can set everything according to what we want to make, having a better size of a book because we don’t need to work on a too big surface and it could also last longer. We can set the words flow according to how we want to design it and there’s no limit on doing it. We can also work faster in mass production rather than the scroll and palm leave formats.
Lecture 3/Tutorial 3 (11/04/18) :
Typography is the most important that a graphic designer needs to master. It is the art or arranging and composing text, it is also a medium for expression and most importantly communication. Characters in a typeface are small Caps, numerals, fractions, ligatures, punctuations, mathematical signs, symbols, non-aligning figures. If we’re working with type to make a body of text more readable, then legibility guidelines are the most important. The first step in making type legible is to choose text typefaces that are open and well-proportioned example of classical serif typefaces such as Garamond, Bodoni, Bembo, etc and the sans serif faces Franklin Gothic, Gill Sans, Helvetica, etc.
Forum Question:
What are the advantages or disadvantages of using a single type family (i.e. Futura Std) vs a combination of type ((i.e Futura Std and Garamond) in the context of book design?
Answer:
From my understanding, I think the advantages of using single type family is that it's easier to format as we're only focusing on 1 thing so you can focus more on doing the layout of the book. As for a combination type, it'll be more eye-catching as it's complimenting the contrast between the typefaces.

For the disadvantages of using single type family is that it'll make the book looks boring as we keep on looking at only 1 same thing as for the combination of type will be a challenge for the designer because they'll have to consider about the line spacing as different font require different line spacing, type size and all the typesetting that have to be done.
Lecture 4/Tutorial 4 (18/04/18) :
This week we are talking about grid system. Mr Vinod always said that reading is important. But to reading easier is even more important. A grid system used in both paper and screen. 2 most important elements in grid system are columns and rows. Set your margin wisely because the character of your book depends on the size of your margin, and set your row within your margin. If you are using InDesign set it on your master page together with your hand line. A handline is the line where you start your first paragraph.
Lecture 5/Tutorial 5 (26/04/18) :

Characters in a typeface are small Caps, numerals, fractions, ligatures, punctuations, mathematical signs, symbols, non-aligning figures. Not only that there are also some foreign characters such as Pilcrow which you can see whenever you press enter to make a new paragraph.
In 1 line usually there are 50-65 characters but ideally, there should be at least 45-50 characters. If you have 10pt for your text, your line spacing should be 13pt because the leading is set 3 points larger than the font size. If you make a new paragraph and you want to have paragraph indentation you'll need to set no paragraph spacing which is the paragraph spacing is just the same as the line spacing and use justified.
If you have a subtext and you set your text at 12pt with 15pt leading you might want to set your subtext in 8pt size but you have to set the leading to 15pt.
Lecture 6/Tutorial 6 (02/05/18) :
From week 6 onward there is no lecture, we only have the consultation with Mr Vinod for our project.
Exercises :
Week 1
So today we start our first exercise by trying to identify 3 options of a book size that we want to use for our book. It has to be smaller than A4 paper and bigger than A5 paper. We also got the chance to make our book mockup with staple bind.
Week 2
For our 2nd exercise, we draw a Van Der Graaf grid in an A3 paper.
Week 3
Identify the book grid by drawing the lines to see how many grids some certain layout uses.
Week 4
Signature folding with A3 paper so we start to fold in landscape position from left to right to make an A4, next we fold it again in portrait position from top to bottom to make an A5, last in landscape position again fold from left to right to make an A6. Then try to number it from 1-16, staple bind it and cut the connected papers.
Week 5
Typesetting and setting the margin, columns and rows.

Feedback
Week 1
The size is ok, 2 of the 3 have the proportional size but I need to make it slightly bigger or I can keep that size (16×20cm). But I end up adding extra 2cm (18×22cm)
Week 2
For the 3000 words overall, it's good. I need to keep the consistency of the line spacing. I also need to add more subtext and pull quotes. Read some books and don’t forget to update it on the reference lists.
Week 3
Reflection
Week 1
Experience
This is the first time I'm cutting and stepper bind by myself. I think it's a good experience for me so next time whenever I want to do things like that I can do it by myself.
Observation
It's quite hard to do it as we need the right tools to do it, flat eraser, a big stepper and we also need a friend or a clip to make sure it's in the right position.
Findings
I found that I need to learn more about binding so that in the future I can do it on my own.
Week 2
Experience
This is the first time I'm doing Van Der Graaf grid in hand so it's quite hard to get it right
Observation
It's quite hard to do it as we need to get it all on hand but the one in digital is also quite hard.
Findings
I found that I also need to do something on hand and not only digital form.
Week 3
Experience
Typesetting is not something easy to do for me cause I need to check carefully what I choose.
Observation
It's still a good exercise for me so that I can work on my typography skill more and more.
Findings
I found that I need to look up for more typesetting so that I'm not stuck in only that certain type.
Observation
It's still good for me so that I could try a lot of grid variations.
Findings
I found that I need to try out more and more grid and explore more on my grid set.
Books & Findings
From reading this book I learn about, not only I use it for my grid identify exercise but I read the layout of this book and they are all amazing, so many varieties and it's all great and working well while it's not disturbing the reading order.

Week 3
Try to look for visual references. The title of my book is interesting. And try to find a book with fewer visuals
Week 4
Week 4
Need to find a way to make it more impactful, try to deconstruct it look from section to section trying to find another implementation on how to show what I actually want to show. Delete some part that’s not necessary.
Week 5
Wednesday: Absent.Week 5
Friday: Visual is working fine, maybe combine some parts together and change some that still too weak compared to others.

Typographic Systems
Kimberly Elam
From reading this book I learn about, not only I use it for my grid identify exercise but I read some pages that teach about hierarchy for reading order. Some grid system with a lot of variations.
