Lectures :

Lecture 3
No class

Lecture 4
So today we do the one on one consultation for the draft layout that we'll be using for the project 1 final. Ms.Lilian recommend me to use the one with the oval visual to make it looks more eye catching and not using both dramatic expression photo because it'll confuse the reader on which one is the main news item and not using both circular visual. As for the typography I'm allowed to choose which one I like the most between all that I've explore. I can also use the first page draft because it has the flow on which one to read first. Ms.Lilian also separate us into 3 groups to do the exercise for project 2 on the brochure folding.

Project 1 (20%)

The Brief
Page Layout Design

Duration of Assignment
2 Weeks (Briefing on Week 4)

DEADLINE
Week 6 (04 October 2017)

Description
You are to design a newspaper named after yourself (ie. Name: YANA, Newspaper name: THE YANA). You may use a copy text or write the text yourself. Similarly with visuals, you are to be creative in its selection, manipulation as well as presentation.

Design a newspaper front page layout in A3 containing two news items. The Main News should contain a headline, a subhead, body copy and one visual with a caption. The topic will be on yourself, specifically your understanding of design in tandem with your ambitions as a designer in the industry. A Secondary News Item containing a headline, and body copy (visual are optional).

You will be guided through lectures, demonstrations, exercises, tutorials aimed at developing your understanding of the practical employment of publication design principles. You will apply the knowledge and skills of Typography acquired to explore and implement the fundamentals of page layout at incrementally challenging levels, culminating in the production of a A3 sized newspaper front page layout. This project will also introduce the use of Adobe InDesign. Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop is needed.

Requirements
The work is compiled chronologically in an A3 Folio and documented on the students’ e portfolio.

Submission
  1. Two (2) A3 sized layouts in portrait and landscape mounted on foam board.
  2. Research and design process filed chronologically, in an A3 Folio.
  3. Design report on e portfolio.
Objectives
  1. To develop students sensitivity to typography, grid and layout.
  2. To develop students understanding of the hierarchy of information.
  3. To develop students ability to communicate visually.

    Feedback

    Week 5
Research Limited. Can look at more, the more you see, the better your sense of
type and image relationship on front page newspaper layout.

Visuals Start editing your visuals! Like the dramatic expression. Start thinking
of the concept/ how you want your front page newspaper layout to look and edit
your visuals accordingly. From what you have provided, the second page, 1 st and
2 nd visual, you may try these two in your area after editing. Of course you are free
to choose others too if you think they are suitable, try them in your layout too.
Perhaps need other pictures to act as second news item. Do remember your brief
    says TWO news item.

Typo Good exploration on type formatting and pairing with a lot of attention to
detail. Best two header typeface is BEMBO and CASLON. But BODONI and ITC
CENTURY works too. Try this four matched with UNIVERS 9/14 for bodytext.
Second type option, if you want to further explore this in your layout: CASLON
10/14 for bodytext vs FUTURA for header.

2 – but where does second news item go?
4 – main story layout + 3 - second news item TO COMBINE!

    Grid exercise Didn’t upload.

    Week 6
The best type face to use is between Bembo and Caslon, choose 1 that I prefer to use. For draft layout I can consider on page 1 and 5 to use but don't use on both of the news circle visual and dramatic expression photo. If possible also try to combine both page and see how the result

    Reflection

    Experience
Ofer all when I'm doing the project and exercises I really enjoy doing all the works because I found out that all the exercises are very helpful for me to work on my project and it doesn't feel like stressing a lot except for the mounting partite takes 1 hour for me and Kumail to mount and cut our work by our own because the printing shop refuse to do it for us.

    Observation
All the work process really enjoying and not pushing me too hard so I can enjoy more on working. I also learned better by doing it and also when I'm looking at examples that I found on my researches rather than just reading since I'm bad at reading, because I found it's harder for me to just read without further explanation.

    Findings
I found that the works are a good practice for me like when I have to mount on the foam board and cut it by my own self, maybe if that time the printing shop assistance willing to help me on mounting it, I would never have a chance to do it by my own self and experience how to do it by my own self. The exercise also help me to do more and more research and mind more examples to look for and refer to and upgrade my design skill.

    Books Reference

The Newspaper Designer's Handbook 6th (sixth) edition by Tim Harrower

This book really helps me on doing my research to find examples about designing front page. It contains a lot of front page examples, and it have the tag whether it's  good, bad or weak to use as a front page.
